Responding to Special Circumstances

Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt,
so that you may know how to answer everyone.  Colossians 4:6 (NIV)

I don’t know how many times, on vacation or during the holidays I have decided to indulge in the food treats – because after all, it’s a special occasion. But then, even though my taste buds enjoyed every bite, if I go overboard, I am usually sorry.
Sluggish from too much sugar or bloated from too much food! Then I don’t enjoy the special time as much. Why do I do this to myself?
But it’s more than just with food. I find that when special circumstances( i.e. visit to the relatives, to the brim houseguests, holiday busyness, a cranky baby, sick kids, marital stress, PMS) arise in the home, I am quick to let go of  healthy relationship patterns with my husband.
Instead of responding with a kind word, I am quick to judge. Or instead of patience, I allow the sharp bite of tiredness rule the moment.
I can choose healthy relationship patterns even in the midst of stress and chaos. It’s harder. It takes the strength and direction of the Holy Spirit. But it can be done.
If I don’t choose the better path, I pay for it! I damage my marriage.
And when I ask myself, “was it worth it?”
I have to say “no”.
I want grace given to me in those moments. Do I give grace to my spouse?
How do you respond to special circumstances?
