Book Review:I,Saul by Jerry B. Jenkins with James MacDonald

Synopsis (from Amazon.com)
From multi-million copy best-selling novelist Jerry Jenkins comes a compelling international thriller that conveys you from present-day Texas to a dank Roman dungeon in A.D. 67, then down the dusty roads of ancient Israel, Asia, and back to Rome.
A young seminary professor, Augustine Knox, is drawn into a deadly race to save priceless parchments from antiquities thieves and discovers a two- thousand-year old connection with another who faced death for the sake of the truth. I, Saul consists of two riveting adventures in one, transporting you between the stories of Augustine Knox and Saul of Tarsus.
Filled with political intrigue, romance, and rich historical detail, I, Saul is a thrilling tale of loyal friendships tested by life-or-death quests, set two millennia apart, told by a master storyteller.

From the first page, I wanted to keep reading I,Saul. Alternating back and forth between the present and the past does not detract from the story in any way. It only adds to the intrigue as bit by bit, the story unfolds and we begin to see how the stories intersect.
I found it easy to connect with and care about the main character, who, for reasons far greater than a treasure hunt, joins the intrigue. I couldn’t help but admire the man behind the choices.
For the intrigue alone, the story of Augustine, could probably stand on its own. But in I,Saul it served as the showcase for what I believe is the bigger story. One I don’t think too hard about beyond the words written by the apostle Paul, formerly known as Saul.
I enjoyed exploring what life was like for Saul during the time this story catches up with him. It brought new understanding to many of the words he wrote, as he instructed the early church. Some things so easily passed over before, now have deeper meaning for me.
I am not an avid researcher when it comes to history. But I love reading what others have discovered and share in their stories. I, Saul is no exception. I’m already looking forward to the next book.

I, Saul is available to purchase from Amazon.
