“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20
There was a day when you went to another country to be a missionary. But now, the world is at your doorstep. No matter where you live, cultural boundaries are crossed. Either physically through travel or virtually through the internet, opportunity abounds in our own community to be a missionary.
Another result of this boundary crossing, is that much of what other cultures consider Christianity is what the media/Hollywood is portraying. Most people receive or reject the gospel through the lens of this understanding and their culture.
Think about all the movies at the theatre. This is what many people view as Christianity. Are we going to let that remain the perception? The first thing that needs to happen to change this misperception is for unbelievers to see authentic Christianity. Not perfect. Just real and inviting.
The good news is we don’t have to take out an ad or do anything dramatic. But we do have to be willing to live OUT LOUD for Jesus. That might feel a bit vague, so here are a few ideas.
Determine what cultures are at your fingertips. Do you live in an area where there are refugees? A University? Any international population? If not, there are still plenty of opportunities online. Look at where you hang out online – are their internationals? Maybe you could add a new community where there are internationals to your list of places to hang out.
Determine the needs of this international population. Most of them are away from everything they know. Away from family. Many don’t know the language and are overwhelmed by the cultural differences. Even online, they are looking to connect with new friends. Be intentional about seeking out these places.
Determine how you can help meet these needs. You don’t have to start a ministry. You only have to reach out to one person/family at a time. There are many agencies that offer opportunities. Or you can make your own. Online, you can also choose to forge relationships that allow for sharing authentic Christianity.
Be kind and friendly to these internationals when you are doing life. Start a conversation with someone from another country at the store. Frequent establishments where they go. Support their businesses.
Help them learn your culture and our language. Meet them for coffee. Invite them into your home for a meal. Include them in your life in some way. Be sure they know that you are a Christian from the start. You don’t have to preach. Just being open with the fact that you are a Christian and be willing to answer questions.
Pray for your new friend and live for Christ. Grow in your understanding of their culture/religion in order to appropriately build a bridge to the gospel. Seek the wisdom of other Christians who are authentically reaching out to the international community. Trust God to lead you.
Misconceptions of Christianity create a wall
